April 27, 2023 – Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) met on Wednesday, April 26, 2023. Some of the items discussed in the public session are as follows.
2023-2024 UCDSB Grants for Student Needs, Funding
Executive Superintendent of Business Services Jeremy Hobbs presented highlights of the Grants for Student Needs (GSN) funding and notable Ministry of Education announcements and GSN changes for the UCDSB, Priorities and Partnerships Funding (PPFs), and Capital Funding for the 2023-2024 school year.
Hobbs explained that the district is projected to receive $388.6 million in GSN funding.
Early observations suggest a stable education funding model for 2023-2024. There are some funding model changes that the UCDSB will be able to absorb for the upcoming year without changing service levels.
A new transportation funding formula will be implemented for 2023-2024 and a preliminary analysis indicates that those formula changes will result in a higher cost for the UCDSB when fully implemented in the 2027-2028 school year.
Hobbs shared that provincially, GSN funding is projected to be $27.1 billion, a 2.7 per cent increase in base funding from 2022-23 Revised Estimates.
A proposed 2023-2024 Budget for Consideration will be presented to Trustees on May 24.
2023-2024 Director’s Work Plan Approved
Director of Education Ron Ferguson along with Executive Superintendent of Student Success and Innovation Eric Hardie presented the draft Director’s Work Plan (DWP) to Trustees for approval.
The DWP adds action to the directions set out in the district’s three-year Strategic Plan, known as CREW, to improve the education and wellness of students and staff. The plan identifies priority areas and specific goals that direct and define the efforts of senior staff to support the priorities identified by trustees.
The goals for the 2023-2024 DWP include improving student success to attain and maintain a 90 per cent graduation rate, enhancing student mental and physical health and sense of belonging, engaging students, staff, and community partners in real-world learning and enhancing pathways, ensuring that staff feel supported by the district in their work and have the resources they need to be successful, and ensuring that students know how to read.
Trustees voted in favour of the Director’s Work Plan for implementation for the 2023-2024 school year.
