Sweet’s Corners Fundraising Challenge Results in Haircut and Over $1.7K for Cancer Research
October 18, 2021 (Lyndhurst, ON) – On Friday, Oct. 15, Sweet’s Corners Elementary School staff and students watched and cheered as French Teacher Sara Langman had 12 inches of hair cut off, completing their school’s Terry Fox Challenge.
Last month, Langman challenged the school community to raise $1,500 for their Terry Fox Run. If they were able to meet that goal, she would cut her hair and draw two student names to help with the chop.
“This challenge was a great incentive to get our students fundraising and excited about it,” says Langman.
The school’s Terry Fox Run was held on September 29 and the small school of approximately 90 students not only met their goal, but surpassed it raising $1,787. The school received a generous donation from the Seeley’s Bay Lions Club, which was included in the total.
The haircut took place virtually, live from Langman’s classroom, on Friday afternoon, and each class was able to watch from their classrooms.
Langman plans to donate the 12 inches of hair to the Hairapy Shop, which will use her hair to create wigs for children with cancer.
“I know some people, even former students, affected by cancer and I want to show that I am there for them and cheering for them,” says Langman.
This is the third time Langman has donated her locks.
“Sara truly is an amazing teacher. She is our school’s Mental Health Champion and is always thinking of others and how she can help out,” says Principal Suzanne Morrison. “The spirit and enthusiasm our entire school and our community has shown towards this fundraising effort has been remarkable.”
