April 7, 2022 (Chesterville, ON) – On Sunday, April 3, North Dundas District High School (NDDHS) students Emma and Ava Acres pulled a win with their curling team at the U18 Provincial Curling Championship in Kingston.

The Ottawa-based curling team named Team Acres, coached by Phil Mainville, is comprised of Grade 12 NDDHS student Emma Acres as skip, her sister Grade 9 NDDHS student Ava Acres as vice, and teammates Liana and Mya.

“We won a qualifier in December to get entry that made us one of the eight best U18 teams across Ontario,” says Emma.

Last week, Team Acres competed against the seven other qualifying teams in round-robin play, which led them to the finals on Sunday. The final game against Team C Johnston was close, but Team Acres won 6-5 in an extra end.

Winning the provincial championship not only makes Team Acres the top team in Ontario, but also means they will represent their province at the National Curling Championships, set to take place May 1-7 in Oakville.

“My sister and I are proud to be able to play against teams from across the country while wearing the Ontario crest on our backs,” says Emma.

“It’s very exciting and a dream come true for us,” adds Ava.

Emma and Ava have been curling together for eight years.

“I am incredibly proud of Emma and Ava for their big win over the weekend and looking forward to cheering them on in May,” says NDDHS Principal Mike Deighton. “The two are great role models to have at North Dundas.”
