June 1, 2022 (Brockville) – June is widely known as Pride Month, and the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) will celebrate all month long as we remain committed to supporting our members of the LGBTQS2+ community.
“We know that students only succeed when they feel safe and respected. This school board takes a strong stance on equity and inclusivity, and works diligently to ensure that the physical and emotional well-being of all students and staff are protected and respected,” explains Chair of the Board John McAllister. “We prepare all students for a successful life and by all, we truly mean all.”
McAllister adds that regardless of sexual orientation, race, or gender, the UCDSB is a safe place for all students, staff, and families to feel welcome, respected and heard.
UCDSB educators have been encouraged to take the opportunity to celebrate diversity and engage students in conversations around inclusivity not just this month, but throughout the year. In June, we will continue to highlight student voice and promote awareness to further support and enhance the student experience.
“As a society and educational system, we’ve witnessed monumental growth when it comes to how our school communities acknowledge, celebrate, and support LGBTQS2+ students and staff,” says Dan McRae, UCDSB’s Principal of Equity and Inclusion. “Part of my job is to go to schools across our district and speak with classes about equity and inclusivity, but to also listen to their concerns and ideas. The dignity and respect of all people are at the heart of this work. In speaking with thousands of students this school year, we have certainly come a long way as a system, but much remains to be done.”
The UCDSB continues to integrate its Board Improvement and Equity Plan throughout the school district. Specifically, for equity and inclusion, the UCDSB has implemented numerous strategic actions to achieve this goal. Some of which include the UCDSB We all Belong Survey where demographic data will be collected from students, developing a student trustees’ equity and inclusion sub-committee, and school presentations, among other initiatives.
If a student or family has ideas or concerns, they are encouraged to reach out to their school principal, trustee, or student senate.
