Orientation Guide for Co-op Students/Unpaid Learners

Under the Occupational Health & Safety Act, co-op students/unpaid learners are now treated the same as regular workers and, therefore, are entitled to the same rights, responsibilities, and benefits. Student placement employers, such as school boards, have the legal requirement to provide a full suite of health and safety training information, instruction, and supervision to unpaid placement students. (Note: This program does not apply to volunteers at school locations.)

The attached “Health & Safety in the Workplace: An Orientation Guide for Co-op Students/Unpaid Learners” was developed to align our processes with this new legislation. Principals and managers must review the guide and ensure that any incoming co-op students/unpaid learners complete the required training as outlined in the Orientation Guide. Principals and managers will find in the guide, a tracking form (Appendix A) that must be completed before the unpaid student learner can begin their placement at any UCDSB location.

Once the required training has been completed,

1. The original must be retained at the Co-op Students/Unpaid Learners' work location and

2. A copy of the form scanned by the supervisor to the board's Health & Safety Specialist via email to [email protected]
