January 22 – 28 is Data Privacy Week. We want to spread awareness about online privacy and how to protect it.
Here are several resources available to help students and parents be more aware of their digital footprint and take steps to protect their personal information.
- Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario website offers Privacy Pursuit as a fun way to examine ideas about online privacy and generate classroom or family time discussion.
- The Educational Computing Network of Ontario (ECNO) offers a K-12 Cyber Awareness Calendar with monthly activities that focus on a range of issues such as avoiding online scams, be kind online, and social media to name a few. The monthly activities also provide links to additional resources.
- UNICEF website offers 10 tips for teen online safety including monitoring privacy settings in social media platforms, don’t feel pressured to accept random friend requests, and reporting activity that just doesn’t feel right.
- The Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC) provides a range of fact sheets on their website. The “Your Child’s Privacy in School” fact sheet defines personal information, your rights, the school’s responsibilities, as well as a few FAQs.
- The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada provides Privacy and Kids to explore privacy education. The site includes resources for teachers, tips for parents and research related to kids’ privacy.
