Char-Lan DHS Food Drive

This article was written by student writer Logan French, Grade 12 student at Char-Lan District High School and first published in the Glengarry News.

December 21, 2022 (Williamstown, ON) - Seen here, are members of the Char-Lan District High School and Glengarry District High School Link Crews. The two senior leadership classes spearheaded a joint initiative in the form of a food drive contest to bring good fortune to those in need.

Students from both schools were certainly glad to participate. "I feel blessed to take part in this. I am just so happy this is going to a great cause,” said GD student Lukas Auer.  Char-Lan student Emily Samson agrees, “We hope that this friendly competition will help out a lot of families in our community,” she said.

The friendly competition between the two schools inspired students, staff, family, friends, and local businesses to help bring in far more food than in past years.  All of the proceeds will go to the St. Vincent de Paul Society food bank located in Alexandria.

On Wednesday, Nov. 21st, Char-Lan hosts GDHS for a “Holiday Hoops” face-off on the senior boys’ basketball court.  The stakes were high for this lighthearted clash as the food drive’s losing school’s principal and vice principal must dawn their opponent’s school jerseys and colours that day.  Not only is school pride on the line, but so are the future modelling careers of all those involved.

Well over 4,800 food items were collected in total, with $1 equalling 1 item in the count.  The Township of North and South Glengarry also donated hundreds of items to their respective schools to bolster points.  On the final day, Char-Lan was deemed the official winner, although they both put in an incredible effort and helped many people.  Congratulations to GDHS who collected 2,796 items and raised $917, and to Char-Lan who brought in 2,018 items and fundraised $3,123.

Though the schools’ donation deadline has passed, readers and participants alike should not be dissuaded from donating.  Let’s keep it up everybody!
