Construction team will break ground over the next month.

September 22, 2022 (Brockville, ON) – The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is proud to announce that it has received additional funding from the Ministry of Education and the approval to proceed with the new Brockville Elementary School.

The new school will be located at 556 King St. West on a 14.3-acre parcel of land close to the Brock Trail and St. Lawrence Park, which is locally known as the previous site of Phillips Cables.

The project now represents a $28,172,313 million investment in education and the community from the Ministry of Education and the UCDSB. Funding and approval for this project is part of the province’s capital investment program to support students with better learning spaces. Construction on the new school is expected to start late September to early October.

The new Brockville school has been part of a long-term vision for the school board to better serve the current and new families of Brockville. It will enhance the community’s educational and recreational infrastructure to accommodate long-term growth and sustainability.

“This new Brockville Elementary School has been on the UCDSB horizon for some time. We are excited that we are now able to move full steam ahead. A new school in the southwest end of Brockville will provide our students with increased learning opportunities and enhance the community around it,” says UCDSB Chair of the Board John McAllister. “We are grateful that the Ministry of Education and our local MPP Steve Clark have put so much support behind this project.”

The new school will be a state-of-the-art facility, with ample green space and parking. It will be a single-story school and have capacity for 504 students. It will feature 17 regular classrooms, four kindergarten rooms, a room dedicated to delivering special education support, a resource room, a large gym and learning commons, in addition to a number of green initiatives including solar panels and electric car charging stations.

There will also be dedicated child care and EarlyON space within the school that will be able to accommodate more than 60 children.

“Ensuring students reach their full potential is an integral part of our government’s Plan to Catch Up," says Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education. “By providing more funding to build the new Brockville Elementary School, as well as making record investments in tutoring and mental health supports for students, we are getting school communities in Brockville back on track. Parents and kids deserve a normal school year, which is why we remain focused on keeping students in their classrooms with extracurriculars, sports, and clubs.” 

The acquisition of this land took place in 2020 and since then, the project has moved through multiple phases, including designing the school and tendering the project. The UCDSB expects to welcome students to the school in September 2024.
