July 24, 2023 (Brockville, ON) – More than 200 students took part in the UCDSB Summer Leaning Program, held July 4 –21 at 14 sites across the district.
Each location welcomed between 15-25 students from Grades 1-6 to enhance their literacy and math skills and take part in some real-world learning activities.
During this three-week, half day program, all sites worked with Song Collab Studio to write, illustrate and voice digital story books as well as their own class song.
However, educators at each site worked collaboratively to give students personalized learning experiences, from organizing guest speakers, to special activities, to walking field trips.
For example, the story that students wrote as a class at the Morrisburg Public School site was about switching places with people in the community. So, to add in some real-world learning, students had the opportunity to visit the post office, library and fire hall to get some behind-the-scenes knowledge about what jobs at those locations look like.
At the Avonmore Elementary School site, a special guest from the nearby Avonmore Berry Farm (and parent of one of the students) stopped by the class to show the process of planting and harvesting their crops, and how strawberry plants survive the winter.
