April 27, 2022 (Carleton Place, ON) – Carleton Place High School (CPHS) welcomed Ottawa-based organization Monarch Cricket to the school this week for an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) Try Day, focusing on cricket.

Try Days are intended to introduce a new sport or activity to students. During the two-period session, four Grade 9 to 11 physical education classes had the chance to participate in modified cricket games and focused on batting and fielding skills.

To take part in the Try Day, the school had to apply to the provincial sporting organization with the sport they wanted to introduce to the school. CPHS received $700 from OFSAA to purchase the equipment and organize instructors to teach the sport.

“I’ve always wanted to get our school cricket equipment,” says organizing teacher Emily Kirk. “I played the sport when I was completing my teaching degree and my professors encouraged us to get cricket into schools as it’s inclusive for all abilities.”

Now that the school has the equipment, teachers will start introducing the sport to Grade 7-12 physical education classes.

“It’s exciting to learn a new sport,” says participating Grade 10 student Ava McKay. Her classmate Mae Kenny agreed, adding “We both enjoyed the bonding and teamwork aspects of the game.”

“The Monarch Cricket coaches are very knowledgeable and we’re lucky that they shared their passion with us,” says Grade 11 student Freddy Sadjak.

CPHS has a baseball field on the school grounds and will now be able to utilize it for cricket.
