Posted on 02/07/2022

The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is proud to share that it has received approval to proceed to tender for the expansion project at Williamstown Public School, in Williamstown, and additional funding to complete other enhancements at the school.

The now $6.6 million project will see the original expansion of the school with five new classrooms, including a new Kindergarten room, resulting in 118 new pupil spaces to the school building. In addition, the rural school will also get upgrades and enhancements that include the following: additional washrooms and a barrier-free gender natural washroom, replacement or retrofitting of the school’s HVAC system for improved ventilation and air conditioning, a wheelchair lift, installation of solar panels, new outdoor signage, a renovated courtyard and an upgraded electrical supply.

The initial Ministry of Education project funding, which is now $3.7 million, will be allocated to the expansion at the school. The additional $2.9 million approved by the Ministry is from the UCDSB renewal funds. Those funds will be used for the additional upgrades and enhancements at the schools as a means to capitalize on the construction opportunity when it is underway.

“The whole community is really looking forward to this expansion project, and now the additional upgrades. Williamstown Public School is one of the larger elementary schools in the district, and having a bigger space that better fits their current and future needs is welcomed by everyone,” said Ward 9 School Trustee John Danaher. “This project is a great investment in the community, I’m happy to see that it’s moving to the next phase.”

This project is part of the province’s capital investment program to support students with better learning spaces.

“We are expanding classrooms and adding 118 spaces for students, along with improvement to the HVAC system, air conditioning and accessibility,” said Minister of Education, Stephen Lecce. “By building a new addition to Williamstown Public School, our government is supporting local families and helping to keep students learning in class in schools that have been made as safe as possible.”

“The funding for this addition to the Williamstown Public School is great news for our community,” added Jim McDonell, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. “This investment will provide a quality learning environment and new opportunities for the children of South Glengarry.”

Williamstown Public School offers both English and French Immersion programming and currently has approximately 360 students enrolled.
