The Upper Canada District School Board is proud to share that it has received Ministry of Education approval and additional funding to proceed with the Westminster Public School gym addition and retrofit of existing spaces.

Initial funding for the project was first announced in 2020 at which time it moved into the design phase. The project has since expanded to encompass more renovations and updates to the school.

The expansion and update has grown into a $7.1 million project. It will provide the school with a state-of-the-art gym to serve the more than 350 students at the school and various community groups that use the facility. Classrooms will be modernized, two new child care rooms will be created to expand the existing child care centre, adding 25 more child spaces. Also, the courtyard and the administrative offices will be updated to create a more welcoming environment for students and staff. All ventilation systems in the school will  be upgraded and include air conditioning.

“We’re thrilled to move forward with this project. It will give our students updated classrooms and facilities, with more space in the gym for all its various uses – from physical education classes to ceremonies, and performances. It will also help address an ongoing community need for childcare services,” says John McAllister, Chair of the Upper Canada District School Board. “We’re thankful for the Ministry of Education’s investment in this project and of MPP Clark's unwavering support."

This project represents a $7,193,383 million investment in the school and is part of the province’s capital investment program to support students with better learning spaces.

“Brockville families deserve digitally-connected and state-of-the-art classrooms,” says Minister of Education, Stephen Lecce. “By building a new gym and creating new, modern classrooms at Westminster Public School, our government is encouraging healthier lifestyles and preparing Brockville students for lifelong success.”

“I’m proud that our government is investing in a state-of-the-art gym, modernized classrooms, new childcare spaces, upgraded administrative space, and a modern ventilation system,” said Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. “Our government will continue to make historic investments to ensure our local schools have the resources they need to provide a world-class educational experience for our students, and provide high-quality child care for working parents.”

The school board expects to tender the project in May 2022. This is a multi-phase project, with a total projected completion date of August 31, 2023.
