June 30, 2023 (Almonte, ON) – A project that began in September wrapped up on the last day of school for Grade 7 students at Almonte District High School, with a special ribbon cutting ceremony at Fitzroy Provincial Park.
The project goal was to inspire a younger demographic about nature and history, and what they can experience at a provincial park.
The class toured Fitzroy Provincial Park in the fall and brainstormed ideas on how to make it more welcoming for children, and how to highlight the parks history.
Five new shadow boxes and plaques were unveiled on June 27 around the park, showcasing the different kinds of fungi, rocks, fossils, and animals that can be found throughout.
Each shadow box also includes a unique QR code for visitors to learn more, with students also creating a scavenger hunt brochure for park visitors.
“It means a lot to have something that we made be out in the public for everyone to see,” said student Colton Giles.
The initial project budget brainstormed by the class was a whopping $18,000 but students were able to whittle it down to around $1,500, with local sponsors helping to cover costs.
“To see what we started with, it’s not at all what we ended up with,” added student Maggie Bughner. “My main job was the budget, so having to recalculate that was hard! A lot of things changed.”
“It was really motivational; children now don’t really spend a lot of time in nature so we’re hoping by adding a fun element to it, they will experience it and enjoy it,” said Penelope Smith.
Students collaborated with Ontario Parks senior staff throughout the process, learning important life skills and about the park’s natural environment.
“The students lead this project with creativity and enthusiasm while accepting constructive feedback well,” explained Fitzroy Provincial Park Superintendent Josie Grenier.
“We were honoured to be chosen for this initiative and look forward to any future projects.”
