English as a Second Language

English as a Second Language

The Upper Canada District School Board welcomes hundreds of English Language Learners (ELLs) to our elementary and secondary schools.

English as a Second Language (ESL) programs are for students whose first language is other than English. These programs offer students the opportunity to develop age-appropriate first-language literacy skills while, at the same time, meeting curriculum expectations.

Kindergarten to Grade 12
K-12 ELLs are supported by school staff, who assist in successful language acquisition, curriculum learning, and integration into the school community.

Upon registration with the UCDSB, a staff member will conduct an initial language assessment to determine your child's English Language proficiency so that teachers can better plan and program for your child's language needs.

Students in our international students program will write a proficiency test prior to arrival in Canada.

Adults
The TR Leger School of Adult, Alternative and Continuing Education offers adult ESL classes, LINC (Language Instruction for New Canadians), and settlement services through the Cornwall Immigrant Resource Centre (CIRC).

If you or your child will need ESL support, please let your school know when registering.
