March 6, 2026 (Lanark, ON) – Educators at Maple Grove Public School are utilizing a series of math-focused storybooks to support learning in their Grade 1 classroom. The books help teachers match lessons to the student’s level of understanding, sparking meaningful math learning and conversations.
Mathology Little Books are short, illustrated math books for Kindergarten to Grade 3 students, created as part of the Pearson Mathology program. Each book uses stories to teach key math concepts such as number sense, patterning, geometry, measurement, and data management. Designed to connect math to real-life situations, the books help make abstract ideas more concrete and meaningful for young learners. They are supported by teacher guides with lesson ideas, making them useful for whole-class, small-group, or independent learning.
Grade 1 teacher Shannon Wheeler has been using the resource since October and has seen positive impact on her students’ overall learning and confidence.
“The Mathology program allows my students to practice math while practicing literacy at the same time,” says Wheeler. “It allows them to read the books to help reinforce their learning on their own time as well. The Little Books have become something the students look forward to and helps support the use of other math curriculums I am using.”
“We’re seeing the Mathology Little Books being received very positively in classrooms across the UCDSB,” adds UCDSB Math Facilitator Amanda Drew. “Teachers appreciate how accessible and hands-on the lessons are, and students are highly engaged with the visuals and real-life math connections.”
As the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) continues to explore innovative ways to support early math development, the Mathology Little Books are proving to be a valuable addition to classrooms. The UCDSB remains committed to providing tools and strategies that empower educators, ensuring students read, write and do math at grade level and graduate on time with the skills they need to be successful.
