June 5, 2026 (Prescott, ON) – On May 28, students at South Grenville District High School (SGDHS) held another successful Relay for Life event, raising more than $92,000 for cancer research.
The event marked the school’s tenth Relay for Life that sees teams walk, run, and roll around the school track during a 12-hour period. To date, SGDHS has raised almost $600,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society since their first fundraiser in 2014.
“This year we are celebrating a decade of running Relay for Life at South Grenville,” said Relay Committee Lead Teacher Jackie Henry. “We’re super proud of these kids. It's a great community, with so many people involved and everybody really pitching in.”
Student Audrey Henry has been leading the Relay Committee for the past three years. “It's crazy how many people are involved with it being such a small school. It’s inspiring that we have something that brings us all together, and that we’re raising so much money. It's so impressive and everyone has been working really hard. I feel like I get teary eyed talking about it!”
Forty-four teams and 430 participants attended the event, with live entertainment, games and food vendors on site to keep everyone motivated throughout the day. In the evening, a ‘Survivors Lap’ saw 25 survivors and their families lead participants, followed by a Luminary Lap where students place personalized and dedicated luminary bags around the track.
Ten teams from Seaway District High School joined the relay at SGDHS for the third straight year, as well as participants from Augusta Township and local businesses like Giant Tiger, and Seaway Physiotherapy.
This year, other UCDSB schools also ran in their own events, including Athens District High School, Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, and Russell High School.
