December 23, 2025 (Brockville, ON) - The move from elementary to secondary school is an exciting milestone for students and families. As students prepare for Grade 9, schools across the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) work together to ensure they feel informed, supported, and confident about the transition ahead.
Beginning in January, secondary school guidance counsellors will visit Grade 8 classrooms to help students start planning for high school. During these visits, counsellors will review course and program options for the upcoming school year, explain graduation requirements, and highlight some of the key differences between elementary and secondary school.
Learn More at Open Houses
All UCDSB secondary schools will host Open Houses in January and February. These events give students and families the opportunity to learn what to expect in Grade 9, explore programs and extracurricular opportunities, and connect with school staff.
All 2026 Open House dates can be found here.
School Assignments
Students are automatically transferred to the secondary school in their boundary based on their current elementary school. If you are unsure, families can confirm their assigned school by speaking to their school principal or using the school locator tool.
Grade 9 Orientation Events
Before the 2026–27 school year begins, most secondary schools will host a Grade 9 Orientation event in late August or early September. These orientation days often include receiving student timetables, touring the school, getting locker assignments, and meeting teachers and staff. Orientation events also provide a great opportunity for students to connect with other incoming Grade 9 classmates before the school year begins.
Supporting a Successful Start
Transitioning to high school can feel overwhelming at times. From guidance counsellors and coaches to administrators and office staff, families are encouraged to reach out whenever questions or support are needed.
We look forward to welcoming students to the next stage of their learning journey and wish all Grade 8 students a smooth and successful transition to secondary school.
