Elf Army Community Tradition Continues at R. Tait McKenzie for 13th Year
December 13, 2024 (Carleton Place, ON) – Celebrating its thirteenth year, the Elf Army at R. Tait McKenzie Public School has been spreading holiday cheer while making a tangible difference in the lives of local families in need.
In 2011, Jennifer Symons - then chair of R. Tait’s parent council – noticed that the community needed its own version of Toy Mountain. She partnered with a local charity to create something more personal: a school-driven initiative to support Lanark County Interval House (LCHS), an organization that provides safety and support to women and children escaping abuse.
The initiative is truly a team effort, thanks to R. Tait French teacher Kellie Graves and the Almonte Print Shop being consistent partners, donating printed ornaments to enhance the campaign's personal touch.
"Our students, parents, and staff are amazing. Every year, the space under the tree and down the hallway overflows with their generosity,” Symons says.
Staff at LCHS, who dedicate time to pick up and deliver donations, have seen the impact firsthand.
“The Elf Army is our largest single donation. Families are incredibly thankful - there are always hugs, tears, and so much appreciation,” explains Tess Powter of LCHS.
Even after the gifts are delivered, the effects linger. In an email from a recipient, they said they had never felt so pampered and special in their life.
The Elf Army began as a simple idea but has grown into a cherished part of the school’s identity. Symons, now a Registered ECE working at R. Tait, says it remains her favourite part of Christmas.
“Families in need deserve to feel joy during the holidays. Knowing we can bring comfort to those who’ve experienced trauma makes all the effort worthwhile,” Symons said.
Year after year, the Elf Army shows the incredible power of a community united by kindness. This initiative isn’t just about giving gifts—it’s about creating hope, spreading joy, and showing the true spirit of the season.
