May 22, 2026 (Carleton Place, ON) – A student-led event hosted by Carleton Place High School (CPHS) welcomed students from surrounding Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) elementary schools on May 19 to promote student voice, leadership, and collaboration.
The event, called PAWsitive Voices, gave participants an opportunity to share leadership initiatives taking place within their schools, connect with peers from across the region and participate in discussions and activities. Participants also toured the school, asked questions about high school life, and received specially designed event T-shirts to commemorate the day.
CPHS student leaders acted as liaisons throughout the event, sharing information about life at the school, highlighting the importance of school spirit, extracurricular involvement and positive relationships with staff and fellow students.
Elementary schools then presented their own leadership initiatives. Caldwell Street Public School discussed the clubs and supports they offer to ensure every student feels included, including their “Stray Kids” club, which helps connect students seeking friendship or support. Arklan Community Public School also highlighted its clubs and spirit days, emphasizing the importance of fundraisers and assemblies to amplify student voice.
Beckwith Public School students discussed their Ronald McDonald House fundraiser, and are planning assemblies to raise awareness about mental health and student well-being.
CPHS students then joined elementary students in small groups for an “Ask a High Schooler” question-and-answer session, designed to ease concerns about transitioning to high school and to give students an opportunity to ask questions in a welcoming environment.
Community partners also shared information and resources throughout the event. Representatives from Open Doors for Lanark Children and Youth and UCDSB Mental Health Lead Lisa Livingston spoke about the mental health supports and services available to students. Representatives from Planet Youth also engaged students in a fun trivia activity that highlighted the importance of building healthy sleep routines.
To conclude the day, participants explored two intermediate division clubs, toured the school, and visited classrooms. The event wrapped up with a rock performance by the Music for Creating class, with students receiving custom T-shirts designed by the school’s Communications Technology class.
