June 11, 2026 (Kemptville, ON) – The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) recognized outstanding employees on Monday, June 8, during the annual Board Celebration Evening held at North Grenville District High School. Twenty awards were given to individuals and groups for their outstanding work and contributions to the UCDSB with one of four awards.
Service Excellence Awards
The UCDSB Service Excellence Awards recognize staff who provide exceptional service to the board’s students, their families and co-workers. Five individual winners and one group award were handed out. This years’ Service Excellence Award winners are as follows:
Paula McCallum and Lynda MacMillan – Teachers, Bridgewood Public School
This duo was recognized for fostering an inclusive and caring classroom environment where every student feels valued. Their strong partnership, creative teaching, and consistent communication with families helps to build a sense of belonging and trust within the school community.
Jody Dixon – Teacher, Maple Grove Public School
Jody has been recognized for her leadership in building meaningful community connections through initiatives like the annual spaghetti dinner and student-run lunch program. Her work provides students with opportunities to give back while strengthening relationships between school and community.
Jennifer Long – Educational Assistant, Maple Grove Public School
Jennifer was recognized for her outstanding commitment to supporting a high-needs student through specialized training, consistency, and care. Her dedication has significantly improved the student’s school experience and overall well-being.
John Smith – Lead Custodian, Centennial ’67 Public School
John was recognized for creating a warm, safe, and welcoming school environment through his daily interactions with staff and students. His kindness, reliability, and strong relationships with students and staff make him a valued and trusted member of the school community.
Laura Zufelt – Teacher, Westminster Public School
Laura was recognized for her calm, professional approach in a demanding classroom setting. Her ability to collaborate, problem-solve, and remain focused on student success has had a positive impact on both students and colleagues.
Crystal Moore, Instructional Assistant, Rideau District High School
Crystal was recognized for her compassionate support of students in the Lift Program. Her dedication to meeting students’ basic needs while building trust and confidence helps create an environment where all learners can succeed.
Ontario Principals’ Council (OPC) Award
The OPC Award, also known as the Ted Kennedy Award of Character, is an award given annually to a UCDSB Principal or Vice-Principal who embodies the spirit and character of the late Superintendent Ted Kennedy. This year’s winners are as follows:
Sarah Rudge – Vice-Principal, Arklan Community Public School
Sarah was recognized for her care and support to the students of Arklan Community PS, especially those with Special Education needs, and for her longstanding commitment to the Terry Fox School Run.
Julie Symonds – Principal, Special Education
Julie was recognized for her dedication to UCDSB students, thoughtful leadership and service above self. She consistently puts students at the centre of every decision, advocating for students to ensure they have the opportunities, support and resources they need to be successful.
Creativity and Innovation Awards
The UCDSB Creativity & Innovation Awards shine a light on individuals who show ingenuity in their classrooms and workspaces, sparking positive and lasting change in their students and colleagues. This year’s winners are as follows:
Brianna Faber – Teacher, Iroquois Public School
She is recognized for creating a student-led initiative that promotes cultural awareness and inclusion. Her work empowers students to lead meaningful learning experiences that celebrate diversity and foster understanding across the school.
Derek George – Teacher, Perth and District Collegiate Institute
Derek was recognized for designing hands-on and realistic learning opportunities for his students in skilled trades. His innovative approach engages students in practical projects that build both technical skills and confidence.
Jennifer Onstein, Teacher, North Dundas District High School
Jennider was recognized for developing creative programming that supports students with special education needs. Her work focuses on life skills, transition planning, and inclusive opportunities that prepare students for success beyond school.
Glengarry District High School Intermediate Team (Lindsey Howes, Brittany MacLennan, Tammy MacSweyn, Marrideth Renwick, and Shana Thomas Lajoie)
This group of educators was recognized for launching a unique specialist program that allows students to explore their interests through experiential learning. Their collaboration with community partners provides leadership opportunities and real-world connections.
Rockland Public School Staff
The school staff at Rockland PS was recognized for embedding student leadership throughout the school culture. Their collective efforts empower students to take initiative, give back, and develop confidence both inside and outside the classroom.
Theresa Vretteas, Teacher and Debbie Gordon, Volunteer – Thousand Islands Elementary School
She has been recognized for creating an engaging program that teaches life, literacy, and social skills through baking and entrepreneurship. Students gain hands-on experience while building confidence and independence.
CEO’s Red Apple Awards
The CEO’s Red Apple Awards are presented to individuals that stand out for their deeply-rooted dedication to our school board’s top priority–our students. This year, CEO Ron Ferguson chose six award winners:
Traci Cote – Itinerant Student Support Worker, UCDSB
Traci was recognized for her compassionate approach to supporting students with complex needs. Her ability to build trust and create safe, inclusive spaces helps students feel supported and ready to learn.
Gary Kenney – Head Custodian, Rideau District High School
Gary was recognized for the decades of service and commitment he has made to maintaining a safe and welcoming school. His positive attitude, mentorship, and care for students have made a lasting impression on generations.
Sheila MacIntyre – Secondary Student Success Teacher, Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School
She was recognized for her leadership in promoting inclusion, student voice, and success. Sheila’s work supporting diverse learners and fostering belonging has had a significant impact on her school community.
David McDonald – Trustee, UCDSB
David was recognized for his long-term commitment to the UCDSB. With more than 25 years of dedicated service as a Trustee, Vice-Chair, and Chair of the Board, he has been a steady and thoughtful leader, deeply committed to student success and strong governance.
Tracy Moorhouse – Elementary Teacher, Iroquois Public School
Tracy was recognized for her effective, data-driven teaching practices that have led to a 24 per cent increase in school-wide EQAO math scores. Her commitment to continuous growth supports both students and colleagues.
Rob Scott – Principal of EQAO and Student Success, UCDSB
Rob was recognized for bringing innovation to math education across the district. His engaging initiatives make learning interactive and enjoyable while supporting student success and achievement has led to significant academic success for students.
