PCPS Time Capsule

October 15, 2025 (Vankleek Hill, ON) – On October 14, Pleasant Corners Public School (PCPS) students, staff and community members came together for a special ceremony marking the creation and placement of the school’s time capsules.

The project was led by the Grade 5 and 5/6 classes, teacher Jennifer Anderson and student teacher Jan Amell in collaboration with the Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) construction class. Designed to capture the spirit, creativity and curiosity of today’s learners, the capsules will be opened by the current Grade 5 and Grade 6 students in 2032, when they will be graduating from high school at VCI.

“This project represents the spirit of learning, curiosity, and connection—values that our school community holds dear,” said Anderson during the ceremony. “As we plant our time capsule, we’re not just burying memories; we’re planting hope, curiosity, and community spirit for the future.”

The project included two time capsules: one buried on the school grounds containing copies of student letters and class photos, and another sealed in Anderson’s classroom with personalized mini capsules and engraved with the students’ names and the GPS coordinates of where it’s buried on the school grounds. The classroom capsule box and site marker were built by VCI students.

“There’s something very cool and exciting about sending a message to your future self. What we choose to place in the time capsule says a lot about who we are and what we think is worth remembering,” says Grade 6 student Tenley MacKinnon. “When we open it again, it will remind us of this moment, our friends, our teachers, and our time at PCPS.”

The event concluded with an invitation for guests to leave messages in a commemorative book, which will be buried with the capsule.

The PCPS time capsule project embodies the Upper Canada District School Board’s Real World Learning approach, connecting students to authentic, meaningful experiences that strengthen community ties and inspire lifelong curiosity.
