Winter Break Update for Families and Students
Winter Break Update for Families and Students
Posted on 12/15/2021

Dear UCDSB Families and Students,

Winter break is almost here, even though it doesn’t look or feel too much like winter just yet. Before we break though, I want to update you on a few important items.

Rapid  antigen testing for students
In an effort to promote a safer return to the classroom on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022, UCDSB schools will provide take-home rapid antigen test kits to all our students learning in-person. All public school boards in Ontario are providing these tests to students as part of a provincial program. A letter from the Minister of Education with more details on the tests and the provincial initiative can be found here.

These kits, along with instructions on when and how to use them, will be sent home with students this week. If your school is closed or if your child is not able to attend school due to isolation requirements, your school will make arrangements for testing kits to be picked up before the end of the day on Friday, Dec.17.

Participation in this screening program is voluntary. Students are not required to take the tests in order to return to school in January. All UCDSB staff are also being offered rapid antigen testing kits to use over the break as well, on a voluntary basis.
Return to active screening in January
When we return to school in January, all students will need to screen for COVID-19 symptoms and provide documented proof that they are symptom free each day, for the first two weeks following the winter break (Monday, Jan. 3 – Friday, Jan. 14).

This means, prior to school each day, all students must be screened for COVID-19 symptoms using the provincial COVID-19 screening tool and students will need to return a signed paper copy of the Confirmation of Screening Form, confirming that they are symptom free.

All students will receive a paper copy of the form this week to take home over the break. You can also download it from our website on the Parents/Guardians Letters page.

Additional items coming home
Some personal items that are normally left at school may be sent home with students this week, as a precaution. We do not have any indication from the Ministry of Education that students will be out of school for an extended period after the winter break, however, we want to plan for every scenario.

Should you have any questions about this information, please reach out to your school principal directly.
On behalf of all of us at the UCDSB, I want to wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday. We are looking forward to welcoming our students back on January 3, 2022.

Thank you,
Ron Ferguson
Director of Education
