Update 3

Dear UCDSB Parents and Guardians,

At this time, no agreement has been made between The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the provincial government. We are still preparing for a strike or political protest on Friday, Nov. 4 by CUPE.

As stated in previous updates, our schools will be closed on Friday, Nov. 4 if CUPE engages in labour action that takes these employees out of the classroom. CUPE represents custodial/maintenance staff, school office and clerical staff, educational assistants, early childhood educators, library workers, and information technology staff.

Teachers will be sending material home with students on Thursday, Nov. 3, to work on independently at home on Friday, Nov. 4, should our schools be closed.

We will update families on Thursday, Nov. 3 if there are any changes, and will confirm in the morning on Friday, Nov. 4 the open/close status of our schools, in the same manner that we notify families about inclement weather days.

We do not know how long this type of job action would last. Our schools will remain closed for the duration of any job action that takes CUPE workers out of classrooms.

If labour action continues into next week, teachers will provide synchronous (real-time) online learning starting on Monday, Nov. 7.

The UCDSB is not directly involved in the provincial negotiations, however we hope that an agreement can be reached that is suitable to both CUPE and the government with minimal impacts on schools and students.
