The Grade 3 French Immersion students at Westminster Public School in Brockville have a lot to celebrate this week, beyond their holiday spirit. They received news that they placed third in their category in the CBC 2020 Music Class Challenge.
Every fall, CBC Music in association with MusiCounts — the charity of the Juno Awards — launches the Canadian Music Class Challenge. The intent of the nation-wide contest is to engage students with Canadian music and provide opportunities for students to showcase their talent.
The Westminster students chose the song ‘Seed In The Ground’, by Canadian singer/songwriter Connie Kaldor. They practiced extensively outdoors in the fall, taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather.
“The students were really into this and it wasn’t hard to keep them motivated. What we learned from the song we used in our science lessons after the fact. It was a really great activity for them and I’m very proud,” said Jeremy O’Connor, music and science teacher at Westminster PS.
The class submitted their video to the challenge in early November and learned this week they earned third place, beating out schools from across the country.
To commemorate their notable performance, the school will receive a plaque from CBC Music for display. This was the second year Westminster submitted an entry in the contest, and were thrilled to learn of their award.
We can’t wait to see what the school comes up with next year.
