Stephen Sliwa is an award recipient for demonstrating all six qualities of Service Excellence in his role as the Director of Education and Secretary to the Board.
Culture of Care
Stephen has always fostered a culture of care in the workplace, not only with the staff he supervises, but all staff as he demonstrates the leadership of showing up and really listening to his staff when he meets with them.
Individualized Care
Stephen is a very kind, caring professional, and always takes the time in his busy day to stop and have a few words with his colleagues. He remembers the names of all the staff and checks in about what's going on in their lives in a caring way.
Above and Beyond
Stephen goes above and beyond by sending his staff cards on their birthdays and messages of support during times of need. For instance, when one staff member was off work due to the pandemic, Stephen sent the employee a card of encouragement.
Recognized and Valued
Stephen recognizes and values the hard work and pride that staff put into their work. He often expresses his gratitude for staff members and outlines the contributions they make in meaningful ways for the greater good of the board.
Collaboration and Communication
Staff are made to feel like equals when working alongside Stephen. He encourages them when they want to take their career to the next step, and gives them confidence along the way.
Action Start to Finish
Throughout the pandemic, Stephen didn't stop working until the staff and UCDSB families were kept up to date on the next steps.
For his caring leadership and communication skills, the Upper Canada District School Board is proud to honour Stephen with a Service Excellence Award.
