Eric Barker is an award recipient for demonstrating all six qualities of Service Excellence in his role as Vice-Principal at Glengarry District High School.
Culture of Care
Eric makes sure that he know everyone's names, and takes the time to connect with students and staff about their personal interests. He checks in regularly, especially with at-risk students. He often joins students outside for recess and during other unstructured times in order to have an opportunity to develop positive relationships.
Individualized Care
Eric is always flexible with his schedule in order to help where needed. He carefully considers each unique situation and develops a plan of action that suits the situation and the staff member, student, or family. He is cognizant of existential circumstances and always takes these into consideration when making decisions.
Above and Beyond
Eric goes above and beyond in his work. He looks for opportunities to boost student and staff morale at every possible moment. For instance, he put in many after school hours to develop a Santa Mystery week of activities, which created a sense of excitement for the holiday break during a very uncertain time.
Recognized and Valued
He always recognizes staff, students, and parents for going above and beyond. Eric takes the time to recognize staff for their efforts by completing service excellence messages and by handing out cards/treats throughout the year. He encourages and inspires staff to provide caring and individualized planning for students.
Collaboration and Communication
Eric is always open to suggestions and ideas when tackling issues and problems, and listens carefully to all input before developing a plan of action. He communicates changes in the schedule as soon as possible and is always open to modifying the plan if needed. He reaches out to parents often and is quick to offer whatever help he can.
Action Start to Finish
From Start to Finish, Eric uses his sense of humour to develop a culture of care and a sense of belonging.
For his caring leadership and communication skills, the Upper Canada District School Board is proud to honour Eric with a Service Excellence Award.
