Jennifer Douwes is a caring teacher who works hard to ensure each student feels supported. As a secondary school teacher at Perth and District Collegiate Institute, Jennifer is known for her creativity, organization and classroom management style that emphasizes structure, kindness, compassion, and confidence-building through meaningful academic tasks.

She goes above and beyond to understand a student’s independent learning plan needs and makes her students feel comfortable in their learning environment. Her impact on her students continues beyond the year or subject that she teaches  a mark of a truly excellent educator.

During the provincially mandated school closure period in Spring 2020, Jennifer’s dedication shone through. She kept all students engaged in distance learning and managed to make them feel like they were part of her classroom. She showed she cared about the successes of each and every one of her students, even though they were all learning apart from each other. In such an unprecedented time, Jennifer provided continuity and calm for her students – an exceptional and essential feat during pandemic isolation.

For her continued efforts to ensure every student feels supported, heard and connected, the Upper Canada District School Board is proud to honour Jennifer with a Director’s Award of Merit.
