Director's Message

Message from Director of Education, Stephen Sliwa

Thank you for taking the time to visit our school district’s website. The Upper Canada District School Board understands its responsibilities to our students, their families, our staff, and the communities where we live, work, and learn. Staff address these responsibilities by doing, serving, and caring about the schools and workplaces that we operate. An emphasis on purposeful learning for our students, providing a safe and welcoming environment for all, and seeking to build public confidence in our education programs is what we strive to provide every day.

We are advancing student achievement through our
Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement (BIPSA), and programming that strives for success. We have established well defined goals and strategies in these critical areas of instruction and have put in place specific measures to ensure a focus on teaching and learning practices throughout our system. An example of the latter is our staff commitment to planning and implementing the provincial Renewed Math Strategy

We are also committed to inclusion and reconciliation through events such as our annual
Truth and Reconciliation Gatherings that allow staff and students to explore Indigenous cultural experiences, learn about Indigenous history in Canada, and build stronger relationships with Indigenous peoples.

Activity in our schools and throughout the school district rely on careful planning and monitoring of the priorities set for schools and for the school district as a whole. The Board of Trustees’
Strategic Plan and Annual Work Plan, as well as the Director’s Work Plan identifies areas where staff attention and financial resources will be devoted during the school year.

Members of the local community have reason and cause to be proud of what is taking place in publicly funded schools within the Upper Canada District School Board. Our staff are invested in
Service Excellence as they teach and nurture students in our schools and support the operations of school sites. All of us together at the Upper Canada District School Board are committed to the Board’s overall vision for UCDSB schools to “prepare all students for a successful life”.

Director of Education, Stephen SliwaSincerely,

Stephen Sliwa,
Director of Education and Secretary to the Board of Trustees,
Upper Canada District School Board.
