April 16, 2025 (Smiths Falls, ON) – On April 15 and 16, the gym at Chimo Elementary School was buzzing with excitement, laughter, and the rhythmic pop of pickleballs as 144 Grade 5 - 8 students from six area schools came together for the first-ever pickleball tournament under the UCDSB’s new All-In Sports initiative.
Organized by teacher Kendra Russell, the event was more than just a tournament—it was a celebration of inclusion, community, and the power of play.
Participating schools included the host school, as well as Duncan J Schoular Public School, Lombardy Public School, Montague Public School, Naismith Memorial Public School, and North Grenville District High School.
“Organizing the pickleball tournament under All-In Sports was an incredible opportunity to bring students together in a fun and inclusive environment,” said Russell. “Watching them engage, learn and support each other on the court truly embodies the spirit of this program.”
The All-In Sports program, currently being piloted by the UCDSB, is designed to expand K–8 sports participation, reduce financial barriers, and ensure that every student—regardless of skill or background—can experience the joy and benefits of physical activity.
This tournament marked a perfect example of that mission in action, with students learning a new sport and cheering each other on throughout the day.
“I like how you can go with partners and play against other people,” said Montague Public School Grade 6 student Jaxen West. “It’s been a really fun day!”
“It’s a proud moment to see students learning a new sport they can take beyond the schoolyard—to parks, driveways, or weekend games with family and friends,” added Russell.
As pickleball paddles were passed and friendships formed across school lines, one thing was clear: All-In Sports is more than a program—it's a movement to make school sports more inclusive, equitable, and empowering for every student.
