Director Update

At the Wednesday, Feb. 23 public Board of Trustees meeting, we received an update from our public health partners about the status of COVID-19 in our community. Masking in schools, and masking among our Kindergarten students in particular, was discussed.  The full presentation from our Chief Medical Officers of Health and the discussion on masking can be viewed here.

Both Chief Medical Officers of Health indicated that as our community health profile is improving and as public health measures are being relaxed, masking for kindergarten students is no longer the priority it was earlier this school year.

Based on this update from both local Chief Medical Officers of Health, Trustees passed a motion to make masking for Kindergarten students optional, not a requirement. This new practice is effective immediately.

Please note, this new optional masking practice is ONLY for Kindergarten students. All other grades must continue with our current masking practices at school and on student transportation. This is a
provincial mandate that all public school boards are required to follow.

As the health of our community changes and the restrictions and requirements that are in place are adjusted, practices within our schools will change as well. We will continue to work with our local public health officials and follow their expert guidance as we learn to live with COVID-19 in our community.

Sincerely,
Ron Ferguson
Director of Education
