July 20, 2020 (Brockville, ON) – At the Special Board of Trustees Meeting on Wednesday, July 15, Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) approved the 2020-2021 school year budget, with operating expenses of $377.8 million and capital expenses at $40.4 million.

Presented by UCDSB staff, the fully compliant budget places the Board on track to meet its target for accumulated surplus, significantly ahead of schedule. With no amendments by Trustees, the approved budget includes:

  • Over 100 additional staff supports directly impacting students;
  • Over $50 million to support special education;
  • Over $1 million investment in technology and connectivity; and
  • Approximately $40 million in forecasted capital expenditures to improve and revitalize schools.

UCDSB staff identified between $0.9 million and $4.8 million in uncommitted revenue that can be used later to respond to emerging priorities and/or the COVID-19 pandemic. Trustees voted to review this possible funding each month beginning in September 2020.

“We are pleased to have passed a budget that focuses on student supports, special education and technology supports,” says UCDSB Chair John McAllister. “The 2020-2021 school year will likely not be ‘business as usual’, so being able to allocate funding to our priority areas while still keeping a reserve for the unknowns that may come up will position us well for the upcoming school year, and beyond.”

The draft budget will be sent to the Ministry of Education for final approval.
