Full details on presentations, reports and discussions can be found in the agenda or reviewed in the recorded broadcast.

July 13, 2020 (Brockville, ON) – Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) met on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 for a Special Board of Trustees meeting. Trustees and senior staff participated in an online meeting to ensure physical distancing, however the meeting was broadcasted live and recorded. Trustees discussed several agenda items:

Revisions to the 2020-2021 School Year Calendar:

Trustees approved the recommended changes to the Draft 2020-2021 School Year Calendar. UCDSB staff revised the draft calendar following a memo from the Minister of Education that advised school boards to start their school year by September 1 and schedule three Professional Activity (PA) days prior to the start of student instruction. These changes provide school staff additional opportunities to train and prepare for the start of the new school year.

The revisions to the draft calendar includes PA Days for Sept. 1, 2020, Sept. 2, 2020, and Sept. 3, 2020 consecutively. Student instruction is proposed to begin on Sept. 4, 2020. The draft calendar has been submitted to the Ministry of Education for final approval.

Projected 2020-21 Grants for Student Needs (GSN):

UCDSB staff presented an initial revenue projection and an update on anticipated expenses for 2020-21. On June 19, 2020, the Ministry of Education released information that the funding for the 2020-2021 school year will be $376.6 million. This is a welcomed increase in provincial funding for the Board, up 2.2% from last year’s legislated grant to the Board.

At the Board Meeting on May 27, 2020, UCDSB staff projected next year’s spending at approximately $376.4M, meaning there is a projected surplus of over $224 thousand and the Board is projected to be compliant within the provincial regulations for setting an annual budget.

The full 2020-21 Draft Budget will be presented to Trustees on July 15, 2020.
