Sarah Stone is an award recipient who embodies all six Service Excellence qualities in her leadership role as Principal at Vanier Public School.
Culture of Care
Sarah shows her staff and students that she cares with a genuine “how are you?” and by showing empathy after intense situations. She has incredible patience and a calming demeanour when faced with challenges, which is appreciated by staff.
Individualized Care
By building relationships with her staff and students, Sarah shows individualized care. She makes time for everyone and recognizes individual strengths and appreciates differences. At the school, she implemented an award for staff and students to nominate others when they witness them going the extra mile.
Above and Beyond
During the unprecedented school closure, Sarah went above and beyond her duties as a Principal and took time out of her busy schedule to post daily update videos and collaborated to incorporate virtual spirit weeks. These actions provide staff, students and families with a sense of routine and they appreciate her infectious smile.
Recognized and Valued
Sarah ensures that each person that walks through Vanier Public School’s doors, whether it be students, staff or guests, is greeted with a friendly smile and she takes the time to learn and remember names.
Collaboration and Communication
Sarah works tirelessly to keep her staff, students and families informed on school events, and has continued to do this during the COVID-19 school closure period. Her guidance and leadership are integral for collaboration among the Vanier staff.
Action Start to Finish
Sarah sets her students up for success. Her office is considered a safe space and many students seek her guidance for solving problems. As one student quoted, “Mrs. Stone cares. She gets me.”
For her leadership and displaying excellence every day, the Upper Canada District School Board is proud to honour Sarah with a Service Excellence Award.
