Mayor visits Linklater Public School

December 3, 2019 (Gananoque, ON) - Gananoque Mayor Ted Lojko was invited to Linklater Public School (LPS) on Nov. 21 to learn about the school’s green initiatives and some of the measures they’ve been using that could be used in the community.

Grade 4 students hosted the mayor, sharing results of a three-month research project into species at risk, the dangers of single-use plastics, and ways to reduce the school’s carbon footprint. During their presentation, students also discussed waste reduction efforts at Linklater, and ways the town could become more green.

“They wanted to suggest how, we as a community, can up our game,” explained Linklater Public School Principal Jennifer McMaster of their address to the mayor.

During their research, students discovered 91 per cent of plastic is single use, items such as plastic straws, bottles, or other trash. Only 9 per cent of this waste is actually recycled. The rest is put in landfill sites or burned. Students also learned the value of composting and recycling programs, and how they reduce pollution and pressure on landfill sites.

The student-run recycling and composting program at LPS has reduced its waste stream 93 per cent. As part of their green efforts, students are encouraged to use cutlery instead of plastic disposables and the Grade 4 class maintains reusable cutlery jars in all classrooms.

Relying on their research, students proposed a variety of actions the town could take to increase its environmental stewardship. Suggestions included the following:

  • working to eliminate plastic straws in Gananoque’s restaurants;
  • introducing a municipal composting program;
  • encouraging stores to sell paper bags rather than plastic ;
  • introducing a town clean-up day; and
  • installing garbage cans in town that have slots for recyclables.

Following the presentation, Lojko invited class members to speak to Town Council about their project. Students will address the councillors this evening.
