Dumont takes bronze in U17 at Nationals

September 26, 2018 (Almonte, ON) -  Almonte District High School’s Aidan Dumont took home a bronze medal at the 2018 Canadian Sprint Canoe Kayak Championships, held in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

The Grade 12 student competed in the 6,000-metre sprint in the under-17 category. Dumont took over the lead in the final lap but was thrown off-course by the wake of a passing boat, and later got caught up in some weeds.

Despite the hurdles, Dumont said the achievement surpassed all hopes he had going in. He had predicted a seventh-place finish.

“I was just so happy I can’t put it into words,” he said. “Before this, the best I had placed at a national event was sixth. At my age, this is pretty massive and it could lead to possible national teams.”

The win followed a tremendous finish for the kayaker at the Ontario championships in the spring, where he got bronze in the 1000-metre single, earning him a spot on the provincial team. He also finished seventh overall in qualification to the Olympic Hopes team at the third set of National Team Trials in Montreal.

Dumont is continuing his training schedule this fall with the Carleton Place Canoe Club in hopes of earning even more success. He is on the water nine to 10 times a week, and his fitness regimen includes running, swimming, weight training and circuit training.

Despite the many hours devoted to his sport, Dumont posted an 87 per cent average last year over a course load that included chemistry, biology, physics and functions.

He also finds time to volunteer for the Paddle All program for Special Olympics and was on the school’s cross country running and skiing teams.

His long-term goals include earning a spot on either the 2024 or 2028 Olympic teams.
