Two UCDSB Students Help Solve “Missing Bear” Case While Raising Profile of Special Olympics
Ontario as Brockville Police Chiefs for a Day

(Brockville) - Two Upper Canada District School Board students traded their school books for a police chief’s cap Thursday afternoon, springing into action to help Special Olympics.

John Sayeau and Liam Baxter-Jeffery became Police Chiefs for a Day, joining Brockville Police Chief Scott Fraser on a ride-along, after reports that Brock the Bear – the local Special Olympics Ontario (SOO) mascot – was missing in the community. Sayeau, a student at Thousand Islands Secondary School, and Baxter-Jeffery, an intermediate student enrolled at North Grenville District High School, responded to the “missing bear” report. Along with Fraser, they launched a search for Brock as part of the local SOO Community Council’s campaign to raise awareness about the organization and to highlight the need for volunteers. While the council has plenty of players signing up for its sports leagues, it needs about a dozen new coaches to run its athletic programs such as track and field, bowling, and basketball.

Sayeau’s foster mother Anne Kundlacz says Sayeau wanted to help the council because of the impact SOO has had on his life. Sayeau is active in a number of SOO athletic programs, such as track and field, swimming and basketball.

“Special Olympics has opened up a whole new world for him,” said Kundlacz of her foster son. “It provides something during the week for him to look forward to.”

Baxter-Jeffery says playing sports with SOO gives him a chance to meet new friends in the community while enjoying physical activity through soccer, running long jump, and basketball.

While patrolling the city, the trio stopped in at the YMCA and The O’Mally Court Fudgery  following reports of Brock sightings. The chiefs soon received a tip the bear was at Boston Pizza in Brockville, where they later found him. The three chiefs joined SOO volunteers at the restaurant for dinner, before escorting Brock to Wall Street United Church where the council was hosting a registration night.

If you are interested in helping the Brockville and Area Community Council of SOO as a coach or volunteer, please contact Dave Cavanagh at 613-342-3961 or by email at brockville.pastchair@specialolympicsontario.ca. The organization has also scheduled a “Breakfast of Champions” at the Royal Canadian Legion in Brockville on Saturday, November 19, starting at 8:00 a.m. The organization is inviting people to come, have breakfast, and learn about Special Olympics.
