May 26th, 2017 (Brockville, ON) – Three Upper Canada District School Board students won bronze last week at the 2017 Canada-Wide Science Fair in Regina.

Clark Bains, of Carleton Place High School (CPHS), won an intermediate bronze medal for excellence and a $1,000 scholarship to the University of Western Ontario for his project The Breaking Point: Increasing Circuit Efficiency and Reducing Heat. Jack Sloan and Monis Sayyid, of Brockville Collegiate Institute (BCI), each brought home a junior bronze medal for excellence and a $1,000 scholarship to the University of Western Ontario.

Bains investigated the effect of current frequency on the production of heat in a wire. The Grade 10 student concluded a higher frequency produces less heat in a circuit making it more efficient.

“It feels good to know the project has had an impact and all the effort is being recognized,” said Bains, who hopes to study computer science in his post-secondary career. “It is a huge accomplishment.”

Sloan and Sayyid won for their project Learn the Burn. The project tested whether commercial upholstery products affect the flammability of different upholstery. The project discovered that stain-guard and water-guard products increase the flammability of upholstery fabrics which increases the risk of injury in a fire.

“It was amazing,” said Sloan. “You don’t really go into a science fair thinking you will make it that far.”

Sloan and Sayyid, both Grade 7 students at BCI, say they eventually hope to enter the medical field.

BCI student Prutha Patel also competed at the national fair.
