May 24th, 2017 (Brockville, ON) – Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) met on Wednesday, May 24th, 2017 to discuss a number of topics including:

  • 2017-2018 Budget Deliberations: Superintendent of Business Nancy Barkley presented a proposed budget for 2017-2018 for review and deliberation by the Board of Trustees. Under the proposed budget, student learning will remain the priority and will continue to drive business decisions. The Ministry of Education compliant budget proposes $357 million in operating expenses, a small operating surplus for compliance purposes of $99,387, and $32 million in planned capital expenses. The proposed budget is designed to continue the District’s positive progress towards meeting the targets of its Multi-Year Financial Plan, established by the Board in 2015.

  •          Indigenous Studies Program Presentation: Superintendent Susan Edwards presented on how the Indigenous Studies Program is providing support to, and opportunities for Indigenous students to be successful. Edwards relayed how the Board has expanded its Secondary course offerings in Indigenous Studies – including the Grade 11 Contemporary Aboriginal Voices (NBE). The number of Indigenous Studies/First Nations, Métis and Inuit course credits earned by UCDSB students has jumped from 785 credits in 2011-2012 to 2,204 credits in 2016-2017. The Board is also supporting learning Indigenous ways of knowing and seeing with its Student iLead Leadership Program and  its annual Truth and Reconciliation Gathering which brings further understanding to Reconciliation and Indigenous ways of knowing to UCDSB grade 5 and 6 students. The 4 day TRC+2 Gatherings strengthen UCDSB’s commitment to our Indigenous families, our partnerships and communities.

  • International Education Program: Superintendent Tim Mills spoke about the success of the Board’s International Education Program. The Upper Canada Leger Centre for Education and Training (UCLCET) recruits international students for the program on behalf of the Board. In 2016-2017, the program supported 178 short-term students and 391 full semester or full-year students, attending 14 elementary schools and 21 high schools. Students come from a number of different countries including China, Brazil, Australia, Mexico, Japan, Germany, Spain, Colombia, Italy, Austria and Vietnam. The program funds 14 English as a Second Language sections, as well as positions for 16 teachers, 13 English language learner instructors and five Program staff. It also generates almost $900,000 in surplus funds for the UCDSB budget. Mills also discussed a strategic review of the program implemented by the UCLCET which made four recommendations to improve the program: increase student enrolment and diversity; build an efficient and sustainable management and operations structure; expand and enhance program options; and expand global partnerships for international and Canadian students.
