March 10, 2017 (Brockville, ON) – Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) met on Wednesday, March 8th, 2017 to discuss a number of topics including:

Communications Department Work Plan: Superintendent of District Alignment Phil Dawes reported on the annual work plan for the UCDSB Communications Department. The plan outlines four general objectives: to support employee learning using different media tools; to communicate board initiatives effectively to the UCDSB community; to assist parents in support of the registration process and transition to school; and to share department expertise with specific groups and committees associated with the UCDSB as part of event planning. Dawes said the plan is reaching these goals through many projects including: the annual registration campaign; redesign of the Board’s website; sharing of Board and school news; and community outreach through video and social media.

Report on Board Strategic Plan: Chair Jeff McMillan presented an update on the Board’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan, focusing on priority areas outlined under a work plan for the 2017-2018 school year. The strategic plan is designed to improve board operations over the long term in four general areas: Collaboration, Resources, Educational Programs, and Wellness. Chair of the Accountability Framework Committee, David MacDonald, described the proposed work plan’s components: student graduation rate, staff culture, student culture, and community. Trustees examined specific goals proposed for each of the work plan’s priority areas, all of which will inform the focus for data collection and staff reports to the Board for next year. In approving their work plan for 2017-2018, the Board is furthering its commitments to students and schools, and its connection with the community.

Fentanyl Alerts in Eastern Ontario and Response by Staff in the Upper Canada District School Board: The Board received a staff report, updating Trustees about how the Upper Canada District School Board is responding to the recent Fentanyl alerts issued by local Public Health agencies in February 2017. The Board heard how staff are meeting with school support teams to discuss strategies that promote health, decrease opportunities to engage in high-risk behaviors, reduce risks associated with substance use, and to look at best practices for reducing drug and substance use. The presentation to the Board detailed how staff are highlighting to students the risks related to drug and alcohol use through curriculum and focused conversations with students, that there are additional efforts underway to counsel students about the specific risks associated with Fentanyl, that detailed information has been distributed to schools and parents to build an immediate awareness about the dangers presented by Fentanyl, and that Board staff are working closely with Public Health agencies about this issue.
