June 16, 2017 (Prescott, ON) Wellington Elementary School celebrated Canada’s Sesquicentennial on Friday by officially unveiling a Canada 150 garden that commemorates the nation, our unique local geography, and pays homage to our Indigenous partners.

As one of the highlights of our Board-wide Canada 150 celebration, the school hosted an official ribbon cutting for the garden, and unveiled a Canadian flag plaque to mark the occasion. Other student-led activities included a ceremony in the school gym which opened with the singing of O Canada, student vocal performances of Canadian-themed songs such as Canada Is, and a personalized video to the school from Governor General David Johnston.

The new garden, located outside the school’s main entrance, beautifies the school grounds and serves as an outdoor learning area for years to come. The 15 by 30 foot landscaped design features a circular garden in the centre planted with a purple standard sand cherry and golden nugget barberry bordered by grey paving stone. Through the middle of the garden is a grey stone walkway that runs from east to west to represent the St. Lawrence River. Four smaller gardens border the landscaped area, planted with pinky winky hydrangeas, represent the four seasons of Canada. In the coming weeks, coloured benches will also be installed in the garden in honour of a traditional Indigenous medicine wheel.

“This is an outstanding way to mark the 150th day of our Canada 150 celebrations,” said Director of Education Stephen Sliwa following the ribbon-cutting. “This garden will beautify the school grounds, serve as an outdoor learning area for lessons in mathematics, science and English, and also remind us of the important relationship we have with Indigenous peoples.”

The ribbon cutting capped off an exciting morning of Canada 150 activities at Wellington, including an earlier ceremony in the school gym which opened with the singing of O Canada, student vocal performances of Canadian-themed songs such as Canada Is, and a special video greeting to the students from Governor General David Johnston.
