South Crosby Public School Hosts Carnival to Benefit “Park it with Parker” Fundraising Campaign

June 9, 2017 (Elgin, ON) – South Crosby Public School raised nearly $6,000 recently to build a pavilion in memory of a young student who died from cancer.

The school generated the funds for the Park it with Parker fundraising campaign through a carnival on Thursday, June 1st, 2017.  The event featured horse and wagon rides, face painting, a bouncy house, water balloon toss, silent auction, “green screen” photos with Darth Vader, cotton candy, and a barbecue run by the Elgin Lions Club.

The campaign is raising funds to create the structure on school grounds in memory of Parker Simpson, a South Crosby student who died on February 8th, 2017. Proceeds from the carnival raise the total generated so far to $16,000, just $4,000 short of what is needed to build the pavilion.

“The carnival went amazingly well,” said South Crosby Principal Monique Antoine-Hartley. “It just makes you feel so warm inside to know there’s such an outpouring of love in this community for this little boy and what he went through. Everyone wants to make sure he’s remembered.”

The 16 by 18-foot structure will provide shelter for students and will be equipped with buddy benches, flowers, shrubs and decorated along a Star Wars theme – an homage to Parker’s favourite movie franchise. The school hopes to build the pavilion as early as this summer.

The next major fundraiser for the campaign is the 2nd Annual Bryan Burtch Memorial Dance, held in memory of an area man who died from pancreatic cancer. Organizers of the July 29th, 2017 event have agreed to donate proceeds to the campaign.

A collection jar will also be displayed at the school’s Canada 150 event on June 15th, 2017.
