PDCI Blue Devils Win 2017 Upper Canada Cup
Intermediate Boys’ Volleyball Championship
Updated February 1, 2017 (Avonmore, ON) – The Perth and District Collegiate Institute (PDCI) Blue Devils defeated Brockville Collegiate Institute (BCI) in three sets Friday to take the 2017 Upper Canada Cup Intermediate Boys’ Volleyball Championship, played at Tagwi Secondary School.
After losing their first match of the day to BCI, the Devils battled back to challenge the Red Rams in the final, winning 25-16, 21-25, and 15-10.
“This was a big win for our school,” said Devils Coach Ed Mitchell. “The entire team played well together. We opened the tournament with a close, three-set loss to BCI and it was great for our players to gain the opportunity to play them again in the final.”
Mitchell said balanced play was key to the victory.
“Our team played excellent defense allowing very few balls to hit the floor,” he explained. “They were also able to bump and set effectively to allow our powerful hitters to put the ball away at key times during the match.”
Perth defeated Rideau District High School in the semis to gain a berth in the final, while BCI beat St. Lawrence Secondary School to win the chance to vie for gold.
