February 23, 2017 (Smiths Falls) - Last week, the Upper Canada District School Board hosted the 2017 EOSSAA Wrestling Championship at Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI).
Thursday’s event attracted 13 teams from across the region, with dozens of athletes taking to the mats. Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) athletes came home with seven medals, as well as the prestigious Officials Cup for both male and female athletes, said convener Scott Pepper.
SFDCI athlete Owen Nichols earned gold in the 64-kilogram weight class, his first gold at EOSSAA. The 18-year-old also won the boys’ Officials Cup, awarded annually to the athlete that best demonstrates the positive characteristics that wrestling builds: determination, toughness in the face of adversity, sportsmanship, fair play and a positive attitude.
Nichol’s brother Chase, 16, took gold in the 83-kilogram class, while younger brother Evan, 14, won bronze in the 57.5-kilogram class.
Rachel Needham, of Perth and District Collegiate Institute (PDCI), took third in the 61-kilogram class, along with the girls’ Officials Cup.
Other UCDSB winners included: PDCI wrestler Bronwyn Funston, who won bronze in the 57.5-kilogram class. SFDCI’s Jess Jasiak earned gold in the 64-kilogram class, while teammate Caitlyn Lesnick won silver in the 115-kilogram class.
