April 12, 2017 (Brockville) – Four students from the Upper Canada District School Board qualified for the Canada-Wide Science Fair on Friday at the 2017 Rideau-St. Lawrence Science Fair.

Brockville Collegiate Institute (BCI) student Prutha Patel qualified after winning Best of Fair. BCI Grade 7 students Jack Sloan and Monis Sayyid earned a trip to the nationals after winning Best Junior Project, while Marla MacInnis of Carleton Place High School gained entry after winning 2nd Best of Fair.

Patel impressed the judges with an advanced project entitled Bacteria: Be OreGONE! The Grade 9 student tested eight different natural agents – ranging from lemon oil to oregano oil – to see if they were as effective at combatting three types of harmful bacteria as a commonly used name-brand hand sanitizer. She determined oregano oil was twice as effective as the hand sanitizer at killing the bacteria, and even created her own hand-sanitizer formula using the natural substance.

“It feels great to win,” said Patel of earning Best of Fair. “I was confident in my project, but I didn’t expect to get best of fair. I don’t know how to express it. It’s a feeling beyond words. It feels good to know that all of the hard work pays off in the end.”

Besides winning the A.E. Burns Award for Best of Fair, Patel also won the Product Analysis and Development Award (Intermediate), the Intermediate Life Science Award, and the Intermediate Biology Award.

Sloan and Sayyid won the George Woods Award for Best Junior Project for their entry Learn the Burn, which tested whether commercial upholstery products affected the flammability of different upholstery. Their experiment also won the Product Analysis and Development Award (junior), and the Junior Chemistry Award.

MacInnis won 2nd Best of Fair for her project That’s My Voice. She also earned the Intermediate Health and Wellness Award.

The Canada-Wide Science Fair will take place May 14-20 in Regina.
