Seven Upper Canada District School Board Students Medal
at Regional Qualifier for Skills Ontario Competition
April 5, 2017 (Kingston) – Seven Upper Canada District School Board students qualified for the Skills Ontario Competition Saturday at the regional qualifying round, held at St. Lawrence College in Kingston.
Students advancing to the provincials May 1-3 in Toronto are: Winston Mavraganis and Matthieu Mcveety, Perth and District Collegiate Institute, gold, 2-D Animation, team of 2; Alex Edwards, Athens District High School, bronze, carpentry individual; Bobby Walker, North Dundas District High School, gold, small powered equipment; Joey Schlapsi and Shawn Little, Rockland District High School, gold, TV and Video Production, Team of 2; and Alex Beaudette, Tagwi Secondary School, bronze, welding.
Cindy St. Pierre Steele, a learning partner with the Board, said she was pleased with the results.
“There are only six events at the regional qualifiers and the fact that our students medaled in five of them, receiving three gold and two bronze medals, is very impressive,” she said.
The seven new qualifiers mean that a total of 27 students from the UCDSB will attend the Skills Ontario Competition. Twenty Board students had previously qualified at the Eastern Ontario Skills Competition, held February 28 in Cornwall.
The Skills Ontario Competition is Canada's largest skilled trades and technology competition and will take place at the Toronto Congress Centre. It offers a unique opportunity for top students to demonstrate their skills in the trades. Select winners advance to the Skills Canada National Competition May 31-June 3 in Winnipeg.
