(Cornwall) – The students at St. Lawrence Secondary School (SLSS) experienced an infusion of dance November 28 when Fit2Dance, a Toronto-based dance education company visited the school to present a dance workshop called Groovin’ KIDS/Teen GROOVE to all students.
Each grade was given 45 minutes of dance training from Fit2Dance Creative Director Michelle Hillier. Students had the opportunity to learn about a variety of dancing styles including hip hop, jazz, Bollywood, Latin, African, contemporary, house, swing, disco and more.
“No one cares what you look like or sound like,” Hillier told a group of grade 10 students. “Own it!”
Grade 10 student Jamie McEwen found his inner groove learning the various dance moves.
“I think it’s really cool,” he said. “At first I thought, ‘oh, it’s another dance class,’ but it’s actually fun. You’ve got to be random with what you’re doing.
“(I’ve learned that) being spontaneous is fun,” he added.
After school, Hillier led a workshop for teachers about how to integrate dance into their lessons.
