(Perth) – Students in the grades 4/5 and 5/6 classes at Glen Tay Public School had the opportunity to meet with Adrian Harewood of CBC News Ottawa on December 8 when he visited the school to work with students on their interviewing skills.

Principal Eric Hardie said Harewood gave the students several pieces of advice through a series of demonstrations. He talked about the “art of the interview,” which included the importance of doing your research, asking open-ended questions, recognizing body language, listening, and understanding that everyone has a story – the interviewer just has to find it.

Harewood also said that it’s important that the interviewer doesn’t rush to fill in silence during an interview. Sometimes, the best answers come after a long pause.

The students will be visiting two local seniors’ residences to interview residents as part of a project they are working on December 20. Students will be recording their work to a Wiki.
