Welcoming Students Back to School for Fall 2020
Posted on 07/30/2020
School Reopening UpdateThe Ministry of Education announced today that our school board will be able to move forward with having our elementary students in class five days a week, with enhanced health and hygiene protocols.

It is our hope that we will also be able to have our secondary students back in class five days a week, but first we need to ensure we can adopt a daily timetable that limits interaction between multiple groups of students while at school. We will provide more information once we have further clarity and assurance on this.

The Ministry of Education, on advice from the province’s top medical professionals, has stated that students in Grade 4-12 will be required to wear cloth masks or face coverings while at school when physical distancing is not possible. Students from JK to Grade 3 are not required to wear face coverings but will be able to do so if it is preferred by their parent/guardian. More details on student face covering protocols will be shared over the next few weeks.

We will be following all recommendations regarding enhanced health and hygiene practices. We are currently working to install additional hand hygiene stations and enhancing the cleaning of school sites. Our next steps are to refine and adjust daily school routines, including drop-off and pick-up for students, nutrition breaks, directional routes within schools, illness protocols, and lunch routines, to name a few.

For parents and guardians that are not comfortable or able to send their child to school, there is the option to continue with distance learning. Pre-registration for full-time distance learning will be required. If this is your intent, please watch for more information on this.

While today’s announcement addressed some of the questions we had about the 2020-2021 school year, there are still a number of details that need to be addressed.  We will continue to update our parents and guardians via email and post information to our website. Please visit our School Reopening Plan page  and FAQ regularly.

Please know that while we are planning for a full return to the classroom, the health and safety of our students and staff is paramount. School staff will receive additional training on the new protocols and procedures that we will need to put in place prior to students returning to our schools on September 4, 2020.

Our school district will continue to work closely with our local health units (Leeds, Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit and Eastern Ontario Health Unit) to ensure that we are doing everything we can to welcome back students and staff safely to our schools.

Thank you, be well and stay tuned for more,
