Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,

As you are aware, in response to the work-to-rule campaign being taken by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) felt it was necessary to cancel or postpone sporting events and extra-curriculars in all of our schools for this week, Sept.30 – Oct.4.

This decision was not made lightly, as we know how important it is for students to have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities. However, this job action affects 10 employee groups and approximately 1,600 staff members across more than 80 sites. There are more than 100 restrictions on the work of these employees, so the effects are felt broadly and deeply.

Field trips, sporting events and other activities take teachers out of schools, which with educational assistants (EAs) and early childhood educators (ECEs) performing restricted supervision duties, puts further strain on the necessary supervision needed within our schools to ensure student safety.

Hosting fundraisers, sporting events or community use activities within our schools requires additional set up, take down and cleaning requirement by custodial staff. We cannot ensure that these employees will be available to do that and do not want to add additional pressure to the regular upkeep of our schools.

Decreasing these activities also limits the processing of forms and handling of money in schools, which is among the job restrictions of our school office staff.

The UCDSB will be monitoring our school operations with a particular emphasis on student safety in order to keep our schools operating as long as possible. Please know we are assessing the situation daily. We recognize the valuable work that CUPE members perform for our schools. We hope bargaining can resume at the provincial level and all parties can reach fair agreements as quickly as possible.

We will continue to update our families and communities as needed through various communication channels including the Board website, My Family Room and social media.

Thank you for your support and patience,

The Upper Canada District School Board
