February 12, 2021 (Brockville, ON) – Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) met virtually on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2021 for a regularly scheduled board meeting.

Update on Enhanced Health and Safety Measures at Schools

Staff updated trustees on the enhanced health and safety measures that are being implemented as a part of the re-opening of schools across Ontario in January and February 2021. The new measures are as follows:

  • Mandatory masking for students in Grades 1-3. This includes outdoors when physical distancing cannot be maintained. Students in Kindergarten are encouraged to wear masks.
  • Effective January 25, all school staff are required to conduct on-site confirmation of self-screening prior to or upon arrival to school sites daily. Schools have coordinated a sign-in process daily confirming completion of daily COVID 19 Self screen.
  • Effective February 10, secondary students are required to confirm completion and passing of daily COVID-19 self-screening. Students have the option of confirming completion of self-screening electronically or by signing a paper version prior to or upon entry to the school.

UCDSB Distance Learning Team Supports Remote Learning

The rapid transition to remote learning for all UCDSB students at the beginning of January resulted in an increased demand for support from the UCDSB Distance Learning Support Staff. The Distance Learning team’s efforts included daily, live drop-in support for all educators, hosting and posting how-to videos and knowledge articles, training for occasional and support staff and responding to parental inquiries related to the digital learning platforms.

Centrally developed resources for elementary teachers were available during the district-wide remote learning period, and continue to be available. There are approximately 5,000 documents/lessons available to staff. As of February 1, 2021, almost 100,000 visits have been logged into the Distance Learning resource site.

Student Device Distribution Update

During the January 2021 school closure in our region, making devices available to support student learning remained an important focus for staff. Since the January 13 report to the board, the UCDSB distributed an additional 450 laptops and 20 internet hotspots for Grade 7-12 students attending schools located within the Eastern Ontario Health Unit. As a result, almost 2,500 laptop devices have been distributed to students for remote learning. Now that schools have resumed in-person learning, staff will recover those devices over the coming weeks.
